View of Oudayas Kasbah where the Bouregreg River meets the Atlantic Ocean in Rabat Morocco is a land of contrasts and enchantment, offering something for every type of traveler. For Americans, it presents an exotic yet accessible destination filled with rich history, vibrant cultures, and unforgettable landscapes. With direct and connecting flights from major U.S. cities and the ability to use airline miles for award travel, Morocco is closer than you think. Whether you dream of exploring bustling medinas, wandering through ancient ruins, or relaxing in luxurious accommodations, Morocco has it all. Let’s delve into some of the highlights—Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Rabat, and Fes—and discover why this country should be your next destination. Renee from Forward Points + Travel in traditional attire in the Agafay Desert Ease of Travel to Morocco For travelers flying from the United States, Morocco is surprisingly accessible. Direct flights are available from Miami, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and New York City to Casablanca, and with connecting options through major hubs in Europe, you can easily tailor your journey. Many airlines, such as American Airlines, Delta, United , and Royal Air Maroc, are partners with credit card travel programs, making it possible to book flights using points. This flexibility makes Morocco an affordable yet luxurious destination. Getting Around Once in Morocco, getting around is relatively straightforward. Taxis are prevalent throughout Morocco and are a reliable option for getting around. Ride-hailing apps are available in some cities, allowing you to pay by credit card. Navigating the maze-like medinas and ancient kasbahs can occasionally be confusing, but Google Maps is generally reliable and can help guide you to your destination. Train travel is also an option between major cities like Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, and Marrakech if you’re feeling adventurous and pack light. For a stress-free experience, hiring a private driver is an ideal choice. With a private driver, you can enjoy door-to-door service, avoid the hassle of navigating unfamiliar roads, and customize your trip with spontaneous stops or detours to must-see spots. This level of flexibility and convenience allows you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty and culture of Morocco without worrying about logistics. Mohammed VI Tower - The tallest building in Morocco and the third tallest in Africa. Proximity to Spain and Portugal Located just a short ferry ride across the Strait of Gibraltar or a short flight from Madrid or Lisbon, Morocco’s proximity to Spain and Portugal makes it an ideal addition to a broader European itinerary. Travelers can easily combine the cultural treasures of Southern Europe with the vibrant flavors and landscapes of North Africa on a tour like this one by Globus. Whether you choose to start your journey in Morocco or end it there, the seamless connection between continents enhances the allure of this destination. Modern Morocco: Your Gateway to Africa For those new to the African continent, Morocco offers an excellent introduction. Its blend of modern amenities and ancient traditions provides a comfortable and enriching experience for first-time visitors to Africa. The country’s infrastructure, world-class accommodations, and welcoming people ensure that travelers feel at ease while immersing themselves in its unique cultural heritage. Morocco bridges the gap between Europe and Africa, offering a taste of both worlds. A Land of Contrasting Landscapes and Weather The Koutoubia Mosque minaret in Marrakech stands tall against the backdrop of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. Morocco’s diverse geography ensures a variety of experiences throughout the year. From the golden dunes of the Sahara Desert to the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, and from coastal beaches to lush valleys, every region offers a unique backdrop. The weather is equally varied: Marrakech and Fes experience warm, sunny days year-round, while the mountain regions can get chilly, especially in winter. Along the Atlantic coast, Rabat’s mild climate is perfect for sightseeing and relaxation. This diversity means you can pack your itinerary with contrasting experiences. Imagine camel trekking at sunset in the desert, skiing in the mountains, and enjoying fresh seafood by the sea—all in one trip. Languages and Friendly Locals Morocco’s official languages are Arabic and Amazigh, but French is widely spoken, especially in urban areas. Many locals in the tourism industry also speak English, making it easy for American travelers to communicate. What truly sets Morocco apart, however, is the kindness and warmth of its people. During our visit, we had trouble finding a taxi after trying twice with car-hailing apps. A kind police officer not only noticed our situation but tracked us down a block away to ensure we found taxis going in the right direction. This small but meaningful gesture highlights the genuine hospitality you’ll encounter throughout Morocco, whether in bustling cities or quiet villages. The Oberoi, a 5-star hotel in Marrakech Popular Among Global Travelers Morocco is a favorite destination not only for Americans but also for travelers from France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, and beyond. Its rich culture, stunning architecture, and delicious cuisine have made it a magnet for tourists from across the globe, each drawn by its unique blend of tradition and modernity. Highlights of Moroccan Cities Marrakech Known as the "Red City" for its terracotta buildings, Marrakech is a feast for the senses. Explore the labyrinthine souks, marvel at the stunning Bahia Palace, and unwind in the tranquil Jardin Majorelle. For luxury seekers, the Oberoi Marrakech and Park Hyatt Marrakech offer opulent accommodations. The Park Hyatt is a particularly attractive option for those using Hyatt points. A traditional way to experience Marrakech is by staying in a riad, a historic home built around a central courtyard. These boutique accommodations, often tucked away in the medina, combine traditional Moroccan architecture with modern comforts, creating a serene oasis amidst the bustling city. UNESCO-listed Aït Benhaddou Ouarzazate Often referred to as the "Gateway to the Sahara," Ouarzazate is a cinematic gem. Visit the UNESCO-listed Aït Benhaddou, a stunning ksar (fortified village) featured in numerous films. Le Berbère Palace provides a luxurious stay in this desert region, blending traditional Moroccan design with modern amenities. Rabat Pool & Atlantic Views from the Four Seasons Hotel Rabat At Kasr Al Bahr The capital city of Rabat combines historical charm with modern elegance. Stroll through the Oudayas Kasbah, visit the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and relax along the Atlantic coastline. For a luxurious stay, consider the Four Seasons Hotel Rabat At Kasr Al Bahr or the Fairmont La Marina Rabat Sale. Both properties offer exceptional service, with the Fairmont being a particularly popular choice for its waterfront location. Staying in a riad in Rabat’s medina is another excellent way to connect with Morocco’s history and culture. Fes Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco, home to the world’s oldest university and a medina that feels like stepping back in time. Lose yourself in the maze-like streets, admire the intricate tilework at the Bou Inania Madrasa, and shop for artisanal goods. Stay in a traditional riad for an authentic experience, or opt for a luxurious boutique hotel for added comfort. • Discover Bratislava: A Hidden Gem of Central Europe

When I traveled to Vienna, Austria, I made time to visit the nearby European capital city of Bratislava. Situated just an hour’s train ride or drive from Vienna, Bratislava, the capital and largest city of Slovakia, beckons with its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning architecture. Nestled along the Danube River, it’s the fourth largest city on this iconic waterway, and it offers a delightful escape for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation. Getting There Traveling to Bratislava from Vienna is a breeze. Whether you opt for the convenience of a train or the flexibility of driving, the journey takes only about an hour. It’s also conveniently located two hours from Budapest and four hours from Prague, making it a perfect addition to any Central European itinerary by train, bus, or car. A quick tip: An hourly regional service links Vienna & Bratislava Petrzalka stations, but it's better to stick with the trains linking Vienna to Bratislava Hlavna, the main station, because there isn't a rail service between the two Bratislava stations. You can reach and experience Bratislava from a different angle by taking a river cruise along the Danube. Companies like Ama Waterways and Viking River Cruises offer itineraries that include stops in Bratislava, allowing you to explore the city’s highlights in a different way. Cruises can range from short 3-day excursions to extended journeys lasting up to 28 nights. Where to Stay Bratislava boasts a range of accommodation options to suit every traveler’s taste and budget. For those seeking affordable luxury, consider staying at one of the many reputable international hotel brands, like the Lindner Hotel Bratislava - JDV by Hyatt. The modern Lindner Hotel Bratislava is located on the green roof of the “Central” shopping center, whose unique architecture is reminiscent of a park. From here, you have direct access to a host of shops and boutiques as well as a fitness center, while also being only a few minutes walk from the picturesque old town. For those with Hyatt points or Chase Ultimate Rewards , you can stay for as little as 3,500 World of Hyatt points per night, which is a great deal. Top Sights to See 1. Bratislava Castle Dominating the city’s skyline, Bratislava Castle offers panoramic views of the Danube and the surrounding region. The castle, with its long history dating back to the 9th century, now houses the Slovak National Museum, where you can explore Slovakia’s rich cultural heritage. 2. Old Town (Staré Mesto) Stroll through the charming streets of Bratislava’s Old Town, where you’ll find a mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture. Don’t miss the picturesque Main Square (Hlavné námestie), the historic St. Michael’s Gate, and the stunning Primate’s Palace. 3. St. Martin’s Cathedral This Gothic cathedral is one of the most important religious buildings in Slovakia. It has been the site of coronations for many Hungarian kings and queens. The cathedral’s impressive architecture and serene interior make it a must-visit. 4. Devin Castle Located just outside the city, Devin Castle sits atop a cliff overlooking the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. The castle ruins offer a glimpse into the region’s past and provide breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. 5. UFO Observation Deck For a unique perspective of Bratislava, visit the UFO Observation Deck on the SNP Bridge. The futuristic structure offers 360-degree views of the city and the Danube River. It’s especially magical at sunset. 6. Blue Church (Church of St. Elizabeth)  This striking Art Nouveau church is known for its pastel blue facade and intricate mosaics. It’s a bit off the beaten path but worth the visit for its unique architecture. 7. Sad Janka Kráľa Park  One of the oldest public parks in Europe, this green space along the Danube River is perfect for a relaxing stroll or picnic away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. 8. Bratislava City Gallery (Mirbach Palace and Pálffy Palace)  Explore Slovak and international art collections housed in two beautiful historic palaces. The galleries often host temporary exhibitions, providing insight into both contemporary and historical art scenes. Local Cuisine Bratislava’s culinary scene is a delightful mix of traditional Slovak dishes and modern international cuisine. Be sure to try local specialties like bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese) and Slovak goulash. Don’t miss the opportunity to try traditional Slovak desserts like "medovník" (honey cake) and "šúľance" (sweet potato dumplings with poppy seeds). For a unique experience, visit a local market such as the Old Market Hall (Stará tržnica), where you can sample fresh produce and local delicacies. Guided Tours and Itineraries If you prefer a more structured visit, consider joining a guided tour. Numerous guided land tours provide in-depth explorations of the city’s history, culture, and landmarks. Whether you’re looking for a day trip or a longer stay, we can help you find the perfect itinerary, tours, and accommodations for your visit to Bratislava. Practical Tips for Visiting Bratislava 1. Currency and Payments Slovakia uses the Euro (€), making it convenient for travelers coming from other Eurozone countries. Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's always a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases or places that might not accept cards. 2. Language The official language is Slovak, but many people, especially in the tourism industry, speak English. It’s always appreciated if you learn a few basic phrases in Slovak, such as “Ďakujem” (Thank you) and “Prosím” (Please). 3. Getting Around Bratislava is a compact city with most major attractions within walking distance of each other. For longer trips, the city’s public transportation system (buses, trams, and trolleybuses) is efficient and affordable. Tickets can be purchased at kiosks or via mobile apps. 4. Best Time to Visit Spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) are the best times to visit Bratislava. The weather is pleasant, and there are fewer tourists compared to the summer months. Winter can be charming with Christmas markets and festive decorations, but it can be quite cold. We have visited in March over spring break, and with the sun out, it felt comparatively warm, but the weather is variable at that time of year. 5. Local Festivals and Events Check the local events calendar before your visit. Bratislava hosts several festivals throughout the year, such as the Bratislava Music Festival, the International Film Festival, and traditional Christmas markets in December. These events offer a great opportunity to experience local culture and traditions. 6. Day Trips from Bratislava Consider taking a day trip to explore the surrounding areas. The Little Carpathians wine region is nearby, offering wine-tasting tours and scenic vineyard views. Alternatively, visit the charming towns of Trnava and Modra for a taste of Slovak history and culture. 7. Safety Bratislava is generally a safe city, but like any other tourist destination, it’s important to stay vigilant, especially in crowded areas and on public transportation. Keep an eye on your belongings to avoid petty theft. Final Thoughts Bratislava may be one of Europe’s lesser-known capitals, but it’s a city brimming with charm, history, and beauty. Its close proximity to Vienna makes it an easy and worthwhile addition to any Central European travel plan. From its historic castles and charming Old Town to its vibrant cultural scene and modern amenities, Bratislava offers something for every traveler. Reach out if you would like assistance finding the right itinerary, river cruise, tours, and accommodations for your visit to this captivating city.

  • You Just Booked Your International Trip – Now What?

Congratulations! You've just booked your dream vacation. But now that the flights, hotels, and transportation are set, you might wonder, “What’s next?” Planning doesn’t stop at booking your trip — there are a few essential steps you should take to make sure everything goes smoothly. Here’s what you need to do after you book that trip of a lifetime. 1. Sign Up for STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) If you’re heading out of the country, the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a great resource. By enrolling, you’ll receive important information about your destination and have access to U.S. embassies in case of an emergency. It’s a simple step that can give you some peace of mind while abroad. 2. Check Travel Requirements Before you start daydreaming about your trip, take a moment to check the entry requirements for your destination. Some countries require a visa, certain vaccinations, or even a fee upon arrival. Verifying how many blank pages you need in your passport is also a good idea. Stay ahead of any surprises by visiting the U.S. Department of State’s travel website . 3. Purchase Travel Insurance Travel insurance is one of those things you hope you never need, but it’s crucial if things go wrong. Whether it’s trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage, travel insurance can be a lifesaver. Try to purchase your policy as soon as you book your trip, especially if you want coverage for pre-existing medical conditions or potential trip interruptions. We recommend Allianz Travel, and you can request a quote from them right here. 4. Consider Learning the Language One of the most valuable things you can do after booking your trip is to start learning some basic phrases in the local language of your destination. You don’t need to be fluent, but knowing how to say simple things like “hello,” “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” can go a long way. It’s also helpful to learn phrases like “Do you speak English?” or “Where is the restroom?” If you have special dietary needs or health concerns, you may want to be able to communicate that in the local tongue. Locals appreciate the effort, and it can make navigating your trip smoother. Language learning apps like Babbel and Pimsleur are great for learning key phrases before you go. Pimsleur offers lessons in over 50 languages through primarily interactive audio lessons with fluent speakers to develop oral language skills in a few months. It is great for listening on your daily commute or on the go. Babbel offers classes in 14 popular languages that are fast, fun, and effective. It combines shorter lessons designed for real-life situations with games, live video classes, and other learning methods enhanced by technology. 4. Look Into TSA PreCheck/Global Entry and Airport Lounges If you’re not already enrolled in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, now’s the time to consider it. Check your credit card benefits to see if they are a reimbursed expense. The reduced security wait times can make a big difference. Similarly, check your credit card benefits for airport lounge options, which can offer a more relaxed pre-flight experience, especially during long layovers, and save you money on otherwise expensive airport meals. These can all be perks of a premium travel reward credit card. 5. Pre-Book Activities and Tours Research and book your must-do activities early! Some tours, attractions, or restaurants fill up quickly, so secure your spot to avoid disappointment. Look into transportation options for popular destinations, and if possible, pre-arrange transfers, especially if you're traveling somewhere with limited public transportation. By taking these steps soon after booking your trip, you'll ensure a smooth, worry-free start to your adventure. Now that you're prepared, you can relax and look forward to your upcoming journey!
