Exploring the Azores of Portugal

As a travel enthusiast with an insatiable hunger for exploring the world's hidden treasures, the Azores held a special allure on my journey's map. You might be wondering, "Where on Earth are the Azores?" Situated as one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal, the Azores form an archipelago of nine volcanic islands in the Macaronesia region of the North Atlantic Ocean. Located approximately 870 miles west of Lisbon, 930 miles northwest of Morocco, and 1,200 miles southeast of Newfoundland, Canada, reaching this remote paradise is no small feat.

Our adventure began with a decision to explore São Miguel Island, the largest in the Azores archipelago, renowned for its breathtaking vistas and therapeutic hot springs. After immersing ourselves in the vibrant culture of mainland Portugal, we embarked on a short and inexpensive two-hour flight from Lisbon to São Miguel on TAP Air Portugal. Possibly more convenient, there are also 6-hour direct flights to São Miguel from the mainland United States from Boston or New York.

Stepping onto São Miguel's soil, I felt an immediate connection to its rich history and stunning landscapes. With my third great-grandfather tracing his roots to these very islands, every cobblestone street and weathered building seemed to whisper tales of familial heritage. The enchanting embrace of our lodging at the historic (and affordable!) 1800s mill, Moinho Das Feteiras, offered a glimpse into the past, painting a vivid picture of the life my ancestor once led. Waking up to the sight of azure skies, swaying palm trees, and lush hydrangea gardens, I found myself in a paradise unlike any other.

Our first day on the island was a symphony of awe-inspiring vistas, with Sete Cidades stealing the show with its twin lakes nestled within a volcanic crater. Even amidst the serene abandonment of a local hotel, standing atop its roof offered us a panoramic view that heightened the magnificence of our surroundings.

Yet, the true magic of São Miguel revealed itself in the therapeutic embrace of Furnas' hot springs. From indulging in the restorative waters of iron-rich pools to wandering through the enchanting Terra Nostra Gardens, each moment was a testament to the island's unique allure. We also delighted in exploring a greenhouse-grown pineapple farm, savoring the renowned Azorean pineapples, and sampling tea at Europe's oldest tea plantation.

.

Reflecting on my sojourn in the Azores fills me with profound gratitude for the opportunity to not only immerse myself in its natural wonders but also to trace the threads of my family's history. It's a journey that has left an indelible mark on my soul, and one that I am eager to share with fellow adventurers seeking their own transformative experiences.

For those yearning to embark on similar odysseys, I stand ready to serve as your guide, drawing upon my firsthand exploration and unwavering passion for crafting bespoke adventures. Together, let's unlock the mysteries of the world and create memories that will withstand the test of time.
